Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine

The Department of Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine at VPS Rockland is geared to deal with the whole array of respiratory disorders like Asthma, COPD, Pneumonias, Interstitial Lung diseases and Sleep Apnoea. Our philosophy is to provide personalized care to all our patients round the clock. We strive hard not only to deal with the acute problems but also to build up an ongoing bond with our patients.

The Department deals in several specialized multidisciplinary treatment for patients with COPD, Asthma, Sarcoidoisis, Lung Cancer and Sleep Disorder and treats both inpatients and outpatients.

Our department is well equipped to deal with preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, emergency and rehabilitative aspects of Chest Medicine to provide quality and comprehensive care for our patients.

It is supported by a team of Critical Care experts & highly trained team of Doctors and Nurses, this department is dedicated to the management of post-operative cases, critical cardiac & non-cardiac cases. The critical care area is supported by digital monitoring system, ventilator support and automated drug delivery system.

The facilities include:

1. Pulmonary Function Laboratory (PFT)

Pulmonary function tests are a group of tests that assess the functional status of the lungs and give us information about the likely cause of breathlessness. It measures how well we can inhale and exhale air and how well the gases such as oxygen move from the atmosphere into the body's circulation.

Pulmonary function tests are done to:

  • diagnose diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, ILD and COPD
  • find the cause of shortness of breath
  • check lung function before surgery
  • measure progress in disease treatment
  • assess the effect of medication
  • measure whether exposure to chemicals at work affects lung function

PFT lab is equipped with advanced Morgansspiroairto perform Spirometry by formally trained and experienced technicians. Preoperative evaluation for patients undergoing thoracic and extrathoracic surgeries is regularly done here.

2. Video-assisted Bronchoscopy

Video bronchoscope and non-videofibrescopes including ultrathin bronchoscope with comprehensive gadget of accessories are available both for diagnostic as well as therapeutic purposes.

Non resolving radiological shadows, unexplained respiratory symptoms, blood in phlegm, foreign body aspirations, lung cancer are some of the cases where these facilities are utilized.

3. Sleep Laboratory

Sleep studies are being done regularly for patients of obstructive sleep apnoea, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, disorders of excessive snoring and day time sleepiness.

4. Pulmonary rehabilitation

Education and counselling sessions are an integral part of outdoor services for smokers who desire to quit. The programmed rehabilitation offers graduated muscle exercises and training for those who suffer from confining respiratory ailments like advanced COPD and chronic respiratory failure.

5. Pleural Aspiration

This is a procedure wherein fluid accumulated outside the lungs in the chest cavity is taken out using a plastic cannula/needle for diagnosis of pleural diseases as well as therapeutic benefit when a large amount of fluid is causing respiratory embarrassment. This is an outpatient procedure requiring 15-20 minutes.

Various indications are:

  • Tuberculosis
  • Cancer
  • Pneumonia
  • Congestive Heart Failure / Renal failure / Liver failure
  • Recent Surgery

6. Chest Tube/ Intercostal Drain

Various diseases involving the pleura (covering of lungs) cause accumulation of fluid/ pus/ air in the chest cavity. This compresses the lungs and has to be drained. A thin tube needs to be put in the chest cavity to drain this collection. We perform this procedure under ultrasound guidance, to ensure safety on a routine basis. Also the cavity can be sealed after the collection is drained to prevent re-accumulation in case of air of rapidly collecting fluid in cases like malignancy, liver and kidney diseases.

7. Allergy testing

Allergy skin tests are tests used to find out which substances cause a person to have an allergic reaction in the form of asthma or allergic rhinitis. The skin prick test is routinely done by our department to find out the cause of allergic symptoms patients have and subsequent advice regarding avoiding some agents or specific therapy.
